Double Wins: YTL Power named the Asia's Power Company of the Year and PowerSeraya the Most Socially Responsible Power Company of the Year

Singapore, 6 April; Both YTL Power and PowerSeraya were each nominated for three awards:

YTL Power was nominated for

  • Power Company of the Year (6 nominees)
  • Most Socially Responsible Company of the year (7 nominees)
  • Clean Energy Initiative Excellence (4 nominees)

PowerSeraya was nominated for

  • Power Company of the Year (6 nominees)
  • CEO of the Year (Mr John Ng among 5 nominees)
  • Most Socially Responsible Company of the Year (7 nominees)

At the dinner ceremony attended by top executives from the power and electricity sector in Asia and other parts of the world, eight awards were given out; namely Power Company of the Year, CEO of the Year, Most Socially Responsible Power Company of the Year, Clean Energy Initiative Excellence, Developer of the Year, Network Reliability Excellence, Smart Grid Initiative and Smart Electricity Government.

These awards have been created to honor and generate recognition of the efforts, accomplishments, and positive contributions of companies and individuals to the growth and development of the power and electricity sector in Asia.  They aim to improve the benchmark and standards of sound, sustainable and successful power projects in Asia to support the rapid development of the region.

Power Company of the Year

Nominated together with other heavy weights in Asia such as Huaneng (China), CLP (Hong Kong), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (Malaysia), China Resources Power (Hong Kong), YTL Power emerged as the winner in recognition of its progress during the year in terms of its business plan & expansion, financial progression, and contribution to social and people development. 

Most Socially Responsible Power Company of the Year

Among other nominees such as EGCO (Thailand), CLP (Hong Kong), Team Energy (Philippines), Meiya Power (Hong Kong), and NTPC (India), PowerSeraya came up top to win this award for its commitment in integrating and executing corporate social responsibility in all aspects of its business.

About the Power and Electricity Awards and Organiser

This award recognises the company that has made the most meaningful progress during the year in terms of its business plan & expansion, financial progression, and contribution to social and people development.

CEO of the Year

This award recognizes the exemplary leadership skills in growing, expanding and transforming the company towards a profitable, responsible and sustainable power company in the Region.

Most Socially Responsible Power Company of the Year

This award recognizes the commitment of a Power company in integrating and executing corporate social responsibility in all aspects of its business.

Clean Energy Initiative Excellence Award

This award recognizes the strong commitment of the company in protecting the environment in every aspect of power generation business in the form technology innovation, reduction of GHG emission, energy saving initiatives and renewable energy projects.

Developer of the Year

This award recognizes an EPC company that has made the greatest efforts to put up new technologies, place environmentally friendly and renewable energy features at the heart of its power project development.

Network Reliability Excellence Award

This award is for Asian utility and grid operator who has delivered the highest standard of transmission & distribution network reliability in meeting increasing energy demand.

Smart Grid Initiative Award

This award is for Asian utility and grid operator who have demonstrated leadership in taking the initiative to adopt and deploy smart electricity in Asia.

Smart Electricity Government Award

This award is for Asian government who has successfully create and provide a conducive environment for smart electricity to be adopted and funded as well as encouraged the research and development of smart technologies.

Awards Mechanics

  • Nominees were identified by polling based on the perception of the power and electricity sector stakeholders.
  • A survey was sent out to over 3,000 executives from the power & electricity sector.
  • About 300 fully completed survey forms were received by the Organizer.
  • The survey respondents came from the following geographic profile:  72% Asia, 8% Australia, 9 Middle East, 11% rest of the world (UK, US etc)
  • Survey respondents industry profile are:  66% power companies and IPPs, 8% Government, 17% investors, and 9% from the service industry.
  • Survey respondents' job title profile is:  CEO/COO/CFO 25%, Director 35%, Managing Director 11%, VP 9%, Managers 20%.
  • Winners are based on the number of nominations plus the substantiation provided by the respondents.
  • An Awards Research Team was created to look into each of the nomination.
